The legend of Bevo
For every UT fan, there's a different version of how the university's mascot, Bevo, got his name. The beloved steer and his iconic name date back to the early 1900s. The legend is that a group of Aggies branded the bull with the mark "13-0" - the score of a football game in which the Aggies prevailed against UT.
Other stories give credit for the name to a popular non-alcoholic beverage produced in 1916 by Anheuser-Busch's St. Louis brewery. The near-beer's name was a mutation of the Bohemian word for beer: "pivo."
Yet another tale states that the names is derived from the word beev, which is the plural word for beef and had referred to cattle intended for slaughter. It was popular in the 1910s to tack on an "o" at the end of a name to create a nickname, and thus, Bevo would have made a fitting moniker for the UT mascot.
